Hirst Woods: Shipley

Hirst Wood Woodland Walk – Near Saltaire/Shipley

Hirst Wood is located just outside Saltaire near Shipley between the railway line and the Leeds Liverpool Canal.  The woods consist of a variety of both main and smaller paths and are popular with families, dog walkers and runners.

We parked at the small carpark, which was actually quite full by the time we got there, but on street parking is also available on Hirst Lane should you need it.

The entrance to the woods is signposted and from here there’s a short uphill walk that takes you into the woods.

We followed the main path until it forked into three. At this point we took the middle path and then just went with the flow – you can’t really go wrong! The paths meander around the woods and after a bit of a walk, we found ourselves back near to the start.

A lovely little walk, perfect for toddlers and younger children, who may not want to walk too far.

Parking

A small number of car parking spaces are available at the Hirst Wood carpark. Alternatively on street parking can be found on Hirst Lane.

A lovely 1 hour walk takes you through the woodland then over a little bridge and back alongside the river with the canal on the other side. We saw a kingfisher and a couple of goosanders. I hear that if you are very lucky you could see a lesser spotted woodpecker in these woods. After your walk you can visit a welcoming cafe with great cakes just up the road on Hirst Lane
