Denso Marston Nature Reserve, Otley Road, Baildon, BD17 7RJ
Last weekend we discovered another fabulous local gem – the Denso Marston Nature Reserve, just off the Otley Road in Baildon. Hidden away between the River Aire and the Denso Marston Factory, at seven acres in size, it is actually quite a decent sized reserve.
We parked in the layby on the Otley Road next to St James’ Church, crossed the main road and followed the signposted public footpath down to the nature reserve.
We didn’t know where we were going, and couldn’t find any sort of map or trail, so we just happily wandered around enjoying the peace and tranquillity. We followed the path along the riverside and then on to a path that took us through the middle of the nature reserve. Here we met Steve, the reserve warden, who told us all about the reserve and what to look out for.
There’s a large pond with a dipping platform (bring your own nets and please return anything that you find back to the water) and another smaller pond, woodland and grassland. Dotted around all over the reserve you will find 50 wooden boards which can be lifted up to sometimes reveal wildlife hidden beneath. Our children absolutely loved this! We found a mouse, loads of frogs, beetles and worms.
At the end of our visit, we found ourselves at the Education Centre, where we were warmly invited to have a quick look around by Steve and the Spider Club, a children’s club which meets monthly on Saturday mornings.
Throughout the year, a variety of events take place at the Denso Marston Nature Reserve including guided walks, workshops and school holiday events. The following may be of particular interest to families and children:
Celebration Day – 10 June 2017
School Holiday Events: (meet at the stone seat on the reserve)
- Pond Dip – 3 August 2017, 1-3pm
- Big Hunt – 10 August 2017, 1-3pm
- Mask Making – 17 August 2017, 1-3pm
- Boggart Hunt – 24 August 2017, 1-3pm
This is a wonderful little place and definitely worth a visit. Just beware the stinging nettles in places – long-sleeved tops and bottoms should help with this!
Parking is available in the layby near St James’ Church on Otley Road.
