Hirst Wood Nature Reserve

Officially opened on 12 September 2015, the Hirst Wood Regeneration Group, along with hundreds of volunteers, have transformed what was once an overgrown boggy field, into a beautiful mini nature reserve – perfect for the whole community to enjoy and right on our doorstep!

We visited for the first time a couple of weeks ago and were truly impressed with what we found. As well as a pond, boardwalk and viewing platform, there is wetland and a wild flower meadow. The daffodils were just coming into bloom and it really felt like spring was in the air.

So much thought and effort has been put into creating the nature reserve. There’s a little children’s garden, a sun dial, various seating areas and even an amphitheatre! The bug hotel is a fantastic addition, as is the beautiful bird table and bird hides.

My son had so much fun just running around and exploring all of the different areas. There’s something for everyone here – whether it’s the little ones letting loose, older children learning about nature and habitats or just somewhere to go for a gentle stroll, a chance to take a seat in an extremely peaceful setting and drink in all that surrounds you.

It’s also perfectly situated to take in the canal and Hirst Wood at the same time. Hirst Lane Recreation Ground and Playing Fields are also just up the road. Definitely one to check out!
