Woodland Walk – Northcliffe Woods, Shipley
If you’re in need of a little fresh air and a gentle stroll, try this short local woodland walk in Northcliffe Woods in Shipley.
There are many different ways to reach the Woodland Walk located in Northcliffe Woods – we choose to start at the main gated entrance to Northcliffe Park on Bradford Road, where there is also a small dedicated parking area. From here, you can follow the main path up and through the park. As we did, we passed the large fenced in wooden play area on our left, and then further up the hill another play area with a climbing frame, slide and swings. You can stay on this path until you reach the far side of the park, but we decided to venture off it and walk along the grassy area to the right, admiring the spectacular views along the way.
The start of the Woodland Walk can be identified by a wooden signpost which shows two possible routes – one veering to the left and staying uphill and one veering to the right and heading downhill (at least I think it was this way round!).
We followed the route that forks to the right, which almost straight away took us down a very large set of steps, which are not in any way pushchair, wheelchair or mobility scooter friendly! There is, however, a well constructed handrail to hold on to, should you need it. Once at the bottom of these steps, you are then on a relatively flat path all the way to the end of the Woodland Walk.
It’s a really pretty walk, even in January and the perfect place for the kids to run freely and play in the leaves. There’s a little stream to splash in, and a nice section of grass with a few picnic tables dotted around. You also pass the Northcliffe Miniature Railway, which runs on most Sunday afternoons between Easter and September.
The walk ends as you come out onto Cliffe Wood Avenue. From here you can turn left and follow the main road back to the main entrance of the park, or alternatively, take a left turn up a set of steep steps before you reach the carpark on Cliffe Wood Avenue. This route will take you past the bottom of the wooden play area, where you can then turn right and head back down to the main entrance, missing walking along the main road completely.
A small number of designated parking spaces are available outside the main park entrance on Bradford Road or on Cliffe Wood Avenue, also off Bradford Road. On street parking is also available at the far side of the park near the start of the Woodland Walk on High Bank Lane.
