Located in Halifax, Eureka! is the only fully interactive museum that is totally dedicated to children aged 0-11 years old, in the whole of the UK! It’s been on our ‘to do’ list for quite some time, and we finally managed a visit a few weeks ago! Here’s how we got on…
Living & Working Together
Eureka! boasts over 600 hands-on exhibits displayed in six unique galleries, as well as fun outdoor spaces and activity zones to explore. We decided to start inside and headed to the Living and Working Together Gallery first. Here we found a little town which included a Halifax bank, post office and M&S supermarket. The supermarket was a major hit! The kids loved filling up their trolleys with goodies and unloading them at the checkout.
Also located in this gallery is a really cool house with kitchen, utility room and living room downstairs, and a bedroom and bathroom upstairs. Role playing in the kitchen was another firm favourite, as was the bathroom, where they had great fun splashing about (protective aprons are available!), a little too enthusiastically…
All About Me
Our next destination was the All About Me Gallery, which was truly impressive! Here we got to visit the Baby Clinic at the All About Me Health Centre, where we were able to scan mummy’s tummy to see and hear baby. We also enjoyed booking appointments to see the doctor and dressing up as dentists. The gallery also includes fantastic exhibitions which showcase how our bodies are made and work, and the importance of healthy eating and staying physically active.
Desert Discovery & Sound Garden
Two of the six galleries have been specifically designed for children aged 5 and under. Desert Discovery is set up as a baby oasis and is particularly suitable for children who are not yet walking. SoundGarden is a magical garden, which contains a big soft, padded up-turned leaf – perfect for babies to lie, sit and play in.
SoundSpace & Our Global Garden
The final two galleries that you can visit are SoundSpace and Our Global Garden. SoundSpace is a futuristic theatre, which encourages children to explore the science of sound and music. In the Global Garden, children can find examples of gardens from all over the world. To be honest, by this point we were all getting a bit hungry, so decided to leave these galleries for another time. The bonus here being that your tickets are valid for 12 months from the day of purchase, so we can come again and again for free!
Outdoors at Eureka!
As well as the amazing galleries, Eureka! also has a number of outside play options. The giant sandpit is said to be the largest of its kind in the North of England! Our children particularly enjoyed the Wonder Walk sensory trail, where children can experience the sensations of sand, mud and water on their feet and hands, hear the wind chimes, smell the flowers and herbs, see bright colours and, of course, touch absolutely everything!
Lunchtime is easy at Eureka! You are welcome to bring your own lunch and eat in any of the on site lunch zones, or visit the Eureka! café, which serves a fantastic selection of lunch options. We opted to buy our lunch at the Eureka! café and then eat it on the Northern Rail Train Carriage! The kid’s lunchboxes went down very well and included a choice of a ham, cheese or jam sandwich, a bottle of water, Pom-bear crisps, a cookie and a piece of fresh fruit. For those with younger children, there is a microwave available for customer use and they also sell baby food if you need it.
